Excellent and attentive staff. English was a real challenge for them but that made it all the More authentic. Perfectly located for the cemetery. This is NOT a resort as so many of the INs appear to be. It is the real deal. The food was first rate and served in your own private eating area on tatami mats. There are many INs that are newer and better equipped but this was very cozy and authentic. My only issue was their use of fuel burning space heaters which gave off noxious fumes. These are common in Japan; however I did not feel confident sleeping with it on for fear of CO poisoning and it was hard to ask pertinent safety questions with the Language barrier. Temple acomodation that allows you to be part of their routine for just one moment. You need to enjoy the experience adapting yourself to them an not the other way around. Great opportunity to know more about buddism on a special location さらに表示

If you were a tired wandering pilgrim taking lodging at Hozenin, you might rate it as fantastic. But if you pay $165 US for the night for 2 people, you would be disappointed with the accommodation. The location is very close to Okunoin cemetery which is ideal, altho it's set very close to the intersection of 2 roads so we did have road noise. The garden was small but pretty. The reception by the monk was cordial. The building itself is a jumble of hallways and staircases, cluttered feeling. Our room had a lovely view of the garden but was shabby. Only one tiny surface to put your things like eyeglasses and camera - all else is on the floor. The negatives: -there was no bed linen! The futon was made up with 2 wooly blankets and a duvet in a slipcase on top. Clearly the blankets are not washed after each use and it was obvious that the duvet cover had been used by others. I wore the yukata to bed but was uncomfortable at the questionable hygiene of sleeping in someone else's used bedding. - no bath towels - just the standard washcloths. - only one hour of free WiFi, broken down into 15 min. Segments, then automatic log off. - gate is locked at 6 pm, shower and onsen open only 4-9 p.m, - meagre breakfast, not even a large pot of tea. The night before we stayed at Hozenin, we stayed at Hotel Monterey Grasmere in Osaka - same price thru same booking site. Clean good quality linen, free WiFi, pleasant clean room decor, writing desk, , mini fridge, kettle and coffee and tea etc. Unless the spiritual side is priceless to you, you might feel as we did that this temple is poor value. さらに表示

Great stay in a traditional lodging. The rooms are comfortable ( glad I brought my own pillow though ) and came with a heater for the chilly evenings. Unfortunately we were travelling during golden week so was expensive for what it was さらに表示
