I very much enjoyed my stay here and the whole Koya-san experience. This was the most expense lodging on my month long trip. Please understand that you are paying for a rare opportunity to stay in a religious environment. If that is something you are interested in than I strongly recommend it. They have daily 7:00 am 30 minute opportunity to join a religious gathering in a special room with an alter that you can participate in.. I thought my room was very nice. I had a Japanese style room and found it very comfortable. It had a nice view of a garden and a mountain. The restroom was down the hall. This is not a luxury hotel and that is not what they are trying to do. All the workers are monks or religious novices. They will not give you the impression the hold a degree in Hospitality and Tourism (I teach at a college which offers this degree). Their focus is on spirituality. Stay here for a unique experience in this area. I am glad I did.

Excellent location about 150 metres from the Okunoin Cemetery. Futon beds in tatami rooms were comfortable. Our room had a balcony overlooking the garden. We had vegetarian breakfast included with our stay and that was nice. This is a working temple, which is why we stayed here. We observed the morning prayers. Recommend staying here despite the cost as it is very convenient when visiting this amazing area.

Location wise- Its near Okunoin near the end of KoyaSan. This means less sights. Meals- Food was not as pleasant as other Buddhist vegetarian meals I experienced in Japan. Nothing great, ordinary. Service- It is good enough. I believe with asceticism comes seriousness. Not as jovial as my previous KoyaSan temple lodge experience. I don't pay for friendliness though so I okay with it. Amenities- Sufficient, though the hours of the bath/shower was not friendly.

The temple is very clean and beautiful. Room is spacious, very traditional, well-equipped and have a balcony with beautiful garden view. Best beddings I had on my 14-day Kumano Kodo hiking journey. The temple's monks and staffs are very friendly, attentive and taking good care of their guests. Breakfast and dinner in a hall with other guests had great atmosphere. The morning ceremony was definitely best experience of all. The location is a plus, central and just a few minute walk to the famous cemetery. Strongly recommended to everyone!

the best place we stayed so far in Japan! beautiful room with own bathroom. room is warm, bathroom and the rest of the ryokan is cold but that is ok. breakfast and diner, typical japanese and kyosan cuisine - really filling and beautifully set up. otherwise there is a beautiful coffee place with lovely food right at the entrance of the ryokan! heated smoking room! and just few minutes away from the the breathtaking cemetery! we stayed 2 nights and it was beautiful! we will come back and stay at the same place! definitely recommend this place for the best Kyosan experience!

We stayed there for one night only. The room is very traditional but comfortable. They provide us with some hot water to make green tea which we love so much! In the morning, there will be morning prayers - it's optional but since we're there, why not. Then, we are served with breakfast at the dining hall. It's very traditional, we sit on the floor infront of the meals served by the monks. You can ask to refill your rice and green tea :D The bathroom is an open shared bathroom and only can be used in the morning - no idea why. Luckily we arrived at night, the staff give us a chance to use the bathroom comfortably. But don't worry, the toilets are available all the time. However, I would really advice not to arrive in Koyasan at night since there's no bus operating and no one there to ask directions - if you needed to. We arrived at 8pm, but it feels like it's already midnight. Overall, the accommodation is very comfortable and is a good place to experience living in a ryokan.

The hotel is a part of the temple, which is very nice with historical, religious feeling, we enjoyed the stay here very much. The room is very clean, big and the facilities are very nice. The Japanese style room is very beautiful with big windows, which can enjoy the nature view through the windows. The Japanese vegetarian breakfast was very nice, which was served in a public Japanese dining room in the Ground floor next to the temple hall. Before the breakfast, monks from the temple sing the mantra and guest can stay with the monks in the hall little then a blessing time will be given by the monk, which was a very peaceful and great experience. I will come back and stay here again.

Staying at Sekishoin is the highlight of my Japan trip. Memorable once-in-a-lifetime experience. Dinner and breakfast served is delicious and portions are huge. Vegetarian dishes taste so nice! The morning praying session is memorable (do take note that the monk will be explaining the praying session in Japanese). Room is clean and there are two heaters in the room. Extra bedding is available in the cupboards. I was kept cozy warm with the heaters and extra beddings. Sekishoin is located 1 min walk away from the bus stop and less than 3 mins walk from the entrance of the okunoin cemetery. Excellent location. Strolling through Okunoin during Winter is so peaceful and enjoyable.

Interesting, and a welcome relief from the bustle of nearby Osaka. Exploring the religious sites of the unique Shingon sect made for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The cooler air of the mountains was refreshing, but it was not too far from the coast to prevent me having a lovely day at the beach a day later. It is a pity some travellers skip Wakayama and Koyasan as it has some of the very best and most unique cultural treasures in Japan.

Koyasan was beautiful and definitely with a visit. However, the temple itself felt like a basic hotel with a temple sign on it. The atmosphere was cold and unforgiving. The dinner was only adequate and was far from what I expected. I do struggle to understand how the high costs were justified.

location: it took us 20mins from the cable car station (bus). there are some small supermarkets and stores around the area(15mins walk)but everything close around 5pm. room: we had the room with private bathroom so we don't need to walk down to the public bathroom for shower in such cold weather. the bathroom is very clean and big. staffs: they can speak very limited English.

Very nice stay. The morning service and veggie meal interesting experience. Sekishoin is next to Okunoin so it is an easy walk to visit this famous cemetery. Koyasan is a small, walkable town and I walked everywhere from Sekishoin. My room over looked the garden and even tho it was winter, I had a nice, calming view.

It was amazing and exactly what I expected it to be and even more. We chose to stay here to immerse ourselves in the buddhist culture, and that's exactly what we got. We ate dinner with the people who lived there, and in the morning went to the ceremony and were included in parts of it and then given breakfast in traditional Japanese style. The rooms were beautiful and the building itself was so big and fun to explore. There was a public bath, so if you're not into that it could be a drawback for you, but it was an amazing temperature and really clean. Of course, there was wifi which was convenient for uploading pictures and looking up directions and all that. All in all, an amazing experience and well worth the money!

First and foremost, this is actually not a hotel but a centuries old Buddhist temple where one can stay. Due to this it has an unbeatable atmosphere, however it might nor work for everyone. The rooms are spacious though rather cold in winter. The monks' morning prayer can be witnessed and the breakfast that follows is healthy and delicious.

Doesn't feel like a temple lodging at all rather disappointing and overpriced Ryokan stay. Have been travelling around Japan for 2 weeks and enjoyed much nicer and cheaper overnight stays at Ryokan. You'd be lucky to see one monk during your whole stay; meals equally disappointing. would not recommend for what it claims to be and the price it charges!!!
