Positives: an interesing ceremony early in the morning. Negatives: the room had a peculiar smell, the room is in the temple compound and the gate is closed at 9pm (I mean closed, so much of evening walk), baths (common) are open from 5pm till 9pm, the poorest English we've encoutered dyring our journey.

We knew the extremely high price from the beginning, but decided to spend one night and it is something unforgettable. The location is great, the kindness of the personnel and bouddhiste monks was great, so polite. We knew all the restrictions (gate close, time for bath and shared bathroom), so there was no surprise. We also took a time (and money) to do the copying of heart sutra and participating the morning ceremony. All went well. Vegetarian dinner and breakfast were ok for us.

We chose the non-food option, and found everything nicer than expected. Room was lovely, overlooking private garden. The onsen was small but nice, and unexpectedly nice was the greeting and tea with the monk. And the morning prayer service with another monk was nice also. Lots of places to eat, fewer at night. Take the walk to the Mausoleum!

Koyasan was such a great addition to our tour of southern Japan. To reach it, you take a slow single track train and then a funicular and then a windy bus. Staying in Yochiin, we took part in the 630 AM service which was a completely new and refreshing experience. We did not eat there, there is a Family Mart next door and an Izakaya down the road, and cafes in the town. The sights are really breathtaking and the countryside as well. We walked some of the women's pilgrim route, about 5 km starting past the Daimon gate. Great views and the terrain wasn't too steep or difficult and tracks well maintained - check for bear advice before you go though. Although there are no frills at all at yochi in, that is really the point and I would recommend going and letting the simplicity of the way of life and the gracious hosting of the monks there ease your soul.

Surprising combination of traditional and modern (room had air conditioning). Traditional breakfast and dinner. In the morning we participated at a Buddhist meditation. It was cold on the hallways (which was probably the case for most buildings in medieval Japan). In our room it was warm, though. Overall an interesting experience.

The temple was great, the monks and the staff was friendly and the food was super delicious. It felt great to soak into the warm water after a long day of walking. The morning ceremony was very interesting although we haven’t understood what the highest ranked monk said. Can really recommend to experience it.

It was a nice experience to have a Tempel stay. The monks are very nice and friendly. To have the full experience i would recommend to book the stay with dinner and breakfast. Even though the food (mostly tofu) is not our preferred choice it is nice to have dinner in that atmosphere. You need to be aware that the room only have a kind of mattress (futon) on the floor. The bath time is only at night from 5-9 pm. So it is not a 5 star hotel. But definitely worth it!

Very humble, but beautiful place. Great hospitality, we were greeted by a monk who took us through the basics of the property and a tea ceremony as well. The onsen in the temple was a real treat. Robes and slippers are provided, as well as hand towels. Curfew for the property is 9pm, although from what we saw, there’s not much going on in Koyasan after that time, so it wasn’t a big deal. The prayers in the morning were definitely a highlight, having the opportunity to watch and then participate in morning chants was pretty special. Definitely an experience I won’t forget

We enjoyed our one night stay in this temple. We had some difficulties locating this temple (because a car parked in front of the sign) but the overall stay was very welcoming and the meals were delicious.

There is absolutely nothing to complain about, and I thought it was a great temple stay in general. Gracious staff, quiet, and very kind to have travelers join the buddhist mornings. My favorite part was actually the shower room - it's very clean and the big tub feels amazing after a long day.

This is the perfect place to experience the real essence of Koyasan, I would go there again. The location was impossible to beat, just one minute by walk to the main area of temples. My surprise was the bath (onsen), perfect after a long day walking!!! Morning prays were authentic, not a show for tourists

Great place for the real Japan experience. Kind staff, great location in super cozy neighbourhood, and spacious rooms. Everything was super clean, and the common areas was never crowded. Absolutly recommended!

It was a relatively affordable way to experience a temple stay in Koya-san, compared to the other options that were all a lot more expensive. Facilities were clean, but be mindful of the 9pm curfew and the four-hour period in the evening when the bath is open (some temples don't have a curfew and have baths open til later in the evening). The vegetarian dinner and breakfast was interesting and a good experience but wasn't really worth the price IMO. The location is great as its right next to a Family Mart (the only convenience store in town) and a few restaurants.

-- says our kind, lady greeter upon our arrival. Great way to experience staying at a temple lodging in one of the most magical places in Japan. Traditional spacious rooms, futons on tatami, you get the picture. The grounds are small, but has a nice zen garden. You'll be invited to join the morning chanting service (45-50 mins) at 6:30am -- great way to start the day in Buddhist Koyasan, but the "sermon" is in Japanese. It's a shame not to get a sense of what was being shared. Do know that the baths are not private baths, and you'll need to strip and bathe with whoever else is there. Not really a problem, but I didn't quite see that in the descriptions. The hot bubbling tub is perfect for the cold weather though. Small towels are provided (I had to use 2 or 3 at a time). And, oh, make sure you're back at the temple by 8 or 9pm. They'll be the locking the gates :) I'd certainly go back especially if I'm in retreat mode. The place is within walking distance to the major sites.

The place that is so serene, relaxing, a place where you can find peace of mind. It is very convenient as there are stores around the area like a restaurant and convenience store like Family Mart. The place is also close to Okunoin, if you want to explore the place, you can either take a bus or for convenience take a taxi which can take you there in about 5 minutes. Clean and beautiful place, there are many temples surrounding the area. The handsome and beautiful staff are very welcoming and accommodating. Thank you so much!
