Kumagaiji is too well-equipped, you feel like you stay in a hostel more than a temple. everything is great, they have a english speaking staff will show and explain when you check in, ensure you understand all rule & all facilities in the temple. Dinner is shojin ryori, a vegie meal for monk, but Kumagiji have modified to fit the favour for all guest from all around the world. The food is great and amazing, we love the tomato so much. Do miss the morning class at 6.30am, if you choose to stay in a temple, then you should not miss this experience. Instead of saying this is a morning class, it feel like a demonstration for the guests. The staff is helpful and pleasant, bedding is so comfy.

Compared to other accommodations we stayed at in Japan, we would have expected more for the price. That said all temple stays in Koyasan are on the pricey side, so if you want to get that experience you will have to pay more than big city hotels. This place was nice and clean. Staff were welcoming and hospitable. Meals were interesting and yummy. Location next to the cemetery made exploring it at night easy. Overall great experience. They do separate out Japanese guest from others, but I just figured it was to avoid them having to explain everything in two languages.

What a great stay for 1 night! Exceeded my expectations with the hospitality provided by the monks, and such a delicious dinner and breakfast with the other guests. Please take the trip to Koya - it is worth it!

Staying here was a once in a lifetime experience. The food and facilities are terrific (shared bathrooms but so many that I never ran into anyone else). The staff were really nice and great at explaining the food and ceremonies. They had a normal morning service and a fire ceremony which were both really beautiful.

I stayed at both Eko-in and Kumagaiji and found the latter to be friendlier and to serve better food. Both had pleasant tatami rooms and public baths. The latter also had shower facilities guests could use when the baths were closed.

The morning ceremony is quite interesting and it's worth to stay here. The bathroom is quite clean and the quality of amenities are good. It has 'Kotatsu' table and mat in the room, which makes one feel nostalgic.

This is my third time staying in one of the Koya-san monasteries. The first two times were great and meals were absolutely delicious. In Kimagaiji both breakfast and dinner were tasteless and left us hungry.

It was nice to stay in a temple and experience the rituals and dining. There were only a few monks and the rituals seemed to be part ritual, part show. Also, the place has been refurbished for some reason. That is not why we came. Wifi, tv, vending machines etc.. I would rather live without these things when in a temple.

We didn't know what to expect, but hoped for a rewarding and educational experience. We were met byamonk and treated so kindly on our arrival after an 11 hour trip to get from Iriomote Island to Kumagaiji. The staff were wonderful! Everyone was so nice and welcoming. We truly enjoyed Kanji-san's explanations. He made us feel at ease and lightened the mood with levity and kindness. The entire experience at Kumagaiji was first class, and I would love to stay there again. The town is beautiful, but this location is particularly special; the age of the temple and authenticity is amazing. We also enjoyed the little touches with hot tea and refreshment brought to our room upon arrival. During the morning ceremonies, the monk was so welcoming and helped us understand and participate in the prayers. We loved every minute of our stay and highly recommend Kumagaiji. Our room was a family style room on the 1st floor which surrounded the temple's main garden. Just Beautiful!

Easy to reach by local bus from Koyasan Stn. Not in the centre but within 100m of Onokuin Cemetery. Stayed in a room with garden view, Ryuge 1/2, being 2 rooms actually. All the major POI can be reached within 10-20 minutes by bus. IMO a must visit for everybody travelling to Japan.

Koyasan was the high point of our trip to Japan, mainly for the experience we had at Kumagaiji. We spent one night and slept comfortably on the Japanese traditional bedding. The 6:30 a.m. prayer service was definitely worth the early wake up call (clanging temple bells) and something you must experience if you come to Koyasan. We booked a "private toilet". This turned out to mean a single toilet in a small room down the hall which was shared by 2 other guest rooms. The alternative is toilet facilities in "college dorm" style. Very nice Onsen, hot bath facility with separate shower. The monk at the front desk speaks fluent English. Highly recommend.

We really enjoyed our stay and experience here. The room was very comfortable and the staff were very helpful and friendly. We enjoyed experiencing the cuisine of the monks, the modem evening bath and the morning rituals. Its also right next the graveyard which is pleasant for an evening stroll. My only negative is that we felt It was a little over priced. But nice to experience none the less.

3 minutes walk to the cemetery entrance and the cemetery tour which is run by neighbouring temple Eko-in. Friendly staff who speak good English. All guests eat together in a well heated room and the food was tasty and they helpfully tell you what everything is. The room is basic as expected. Yes it can be a big cold in autumn/winter, but the bedding is very warm with lots of blankets and they supply a heater too. Onsen are clean and relaxing.

Our stay at Kumagaiji was wonderful. We wished we had more than 1 night. Our only disappointment was that the meals and ceremonies are only work fellow tourists, let by a monk. It would feel more authentic to participate in the things they do. Instead, it feels a bit like they're just putting on a show.

Definitely worth spending a couple of nights, to give yourself time to relax and enjoy the setting and the onsen. Food was great and different each night. Rooms were beautiful and we had a great view of the ornamental pond. Morning ceremonies were interesting, we skipped them the next morning with no trouble.

Nice and beautifull place. I really enjoyed the bath. But don't expect to feel like in a temple, despite the morning ceremony. It is made for tourism and it is good for that, but for meditation look somewhere else. The cemetery is a beautifully attraction.
