The awesome service attitude of the staff is a standout. It was a relief to have a reliable source of information in English. The room was perfectly adequate. I slept wonderfully every night. It is not the nearest to the sights but buses are accessible nearby.

I personally prefer to stay at small boutique style hotels than large brand hotels and this one fit the bill. Because there were less than 50 rooms, the staff was very personable and remembered us when we walked into the lobby after being out all day. They helped us figure out where to go and called taxis for us, even walking outside to give the taxi driver our destination. The hotel was extremely clean, like everything in Japan. The breakfasts were extra but tasty and priced well. I would stay there again and recommend them to my friends.

The ryokan was really lovely! We had a lovely stay, friendly staff, good facilities and location was quite convenient. The breakfast in the morning was amazing and the room was really quaint and traditional. Would definitely recommend to book a ryokan over a hotel if you're ever in Kyoto.

We stayed for 2 nights in Kyoto and chose this Ryokan because wanted a more traditional feel to our stay in this city. The hotel is very nice, its staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. I think the location is very nice because it is quite but you are walking distance from the station and very close to a number of bus lines that will take you all over. The bathroom was extremely small but it did the trick. Loved the yukatas. Would go back.

Oce you get past the only negative aspect of this hotel (the distance from Kyoto Station), it's so easy to fall in love with this place. The staff are so warm and sweet, taking care of your every need despite not being a major hotel. The rooms (we stayed in a tea-ceremony style room) are simple, spacious and well-designed. Me and the wife enjoyed the tatami mats, as well as the futons. This ryokan is highly recommended!

Quite satisfied with its clean and private (which means it has individual bathroom at every room and a barring door that keeps privacy) room of traditional Japanese ryokan style. One downside is its location just in front of Nishi-Honganji that requires quite walk from public transportation such as bus and station. Though buses(9, 11 line) are just in front of this accomodation, it's uncomfortable.

The hotel is a bit difficult to find for the first time. But you can take a bus no. 28 from the JR station and get off the stop at Honganji, it is only the street behind. The staff can speak perfect English (coz one if them is from the States, ;) and even the Japanese staff can speak English. They are alll very helpful. I shall definitely stay there again!

First time staying at a ryokan style hotel with tatami. We have to make our own beds and the room was compact but still very clean and comfortable. Bathroom was tiny but has everything you need. Some staff were more helpful than others, nonetheless, good service. Came in exhausted from an overnight flight during peak season and were allowed to check in slightly earlier than scheduled which was greatly appreciated. About 15 min from Kyoto station or 3 min walk from no 9 bus (to Kyoto station).

The ryokan is approx 15 - 20min walk from the kyoto station. Staff was friendly to share on attractions and surrounding food places. A few buses does go to a temple near the ryokan, can ask the tourist center for more info. worth it esp if you are on a 1 or 2 day bus pass. A 3-storey building, rooms are clean, and looks relatively new. price is a little high for its location, but probably because Kyoto is mainly a tourist area, and hotels are more ex.

This ryokan is a little bit far from the nearest station (Kyoto Station) if you are dragging your luggage along, but it is close to sightseeing destinations. Grab a cab if you have to, it won't cost more than. We were very happy with the cleanliness of the rooms. The ryokan felt really new and has a lift, which is great if you have bulky luggage. We stayed in a Japanese tatami room and laid out our own futons every night. The toilets are a little small but it's pretty ok if you're just taking a shower. The staff range from cordial to amiable, depending on who's on duty. There was an elderly gentleman on night duty who spoke excellent English and was extremely helpful - regrettably, we did not get his name. Overall I would definitely consider staying here again if I'm looking for good value, mid-priced accommodation.

i'd been staying for 7 nights in the western room of this hotel. i was amazed by their well english spoken staff at the moment i checked in. they were not only friendly, but also very resourceful. they were able to answer most of all the questions about transportation & local seasonal sightseen features. and the loacation is very close to the city bus stops. it was a really pleasent stay.

Loved that we were greeted so warmly in both Japanese and English since my travel partner was English. They even took our bags up to our room whilst we went out in the day before check-in time. The interiors of the lobby was very welcoming and loved that it was dark with very zen-like furnishings, a lovely respite from the heat outside. We were served ice hojicha as well while we waited to sort out some check-in paperwork. We were asked if we needed maps of the surrounding area, bus maps of kyoto, etc. which was all wonderful. The rooms were small and very modern as compared to a traditional ryokan I stayed in Fukuoka once but this is nice and 'user-friendly' for those new to Japanese ryokans. There are even guides and tea packets in both Japanese and English so this should be great for Western travellers as well or those not familiar with the Japanese language. If you would like to look at some travel guides, etc. there are some available in the lobby as well as two computers if you need to access the internet or print materials. This ryokan is lovely and a real find close to the JR Kyoto Station. However, if you intend to stay out late or hang around the nightspots like Pontocho, remember that the subway doesn't run past midnight. Get a bus or split a taxi. You'll be happy to know that Kyomachiya Ryokan Sakura has a night entrance for you. You have to enter with a pin but it's a relief to know that the security of this hotel is in place. Also, make sure to turn your wooden card (next to main entrance) to indicate if you're IN or OUT of the hotel. Any messages left for you at the reception will be indicated with a 'We have a message for you' wooden card. A real pleasant stay this was!
