Sometimes, it’s hard to review a place because it was such a special experience that words can’t seem to do it justice. Ryokan Harimaya is one of these places. The family that runs this little traditional inn is wonderful in every way, and staying here is an opportunity to have a very local experience. We stayed for 6 days at this inn, and it was the highlight of our trip in Kyoto. The rooms are big enough and include futons, tea and coffee, and little treats that are left daily for you to enjoy – something different every day. Every evening, a steaming hot bath is provided and you can shower anytime. Yukatas, obis, hantens and slippers are provided, so you will be very comfortable. It’s the owners that make this a special place. From the moment you first walk in the door, Ayumi or her mother are there on their knees to welcome you to their home. They don’t speak a lot of English, but they speak enough. Every time they see you, they will ask if you had a good day, if you need help finding anything, if everything is ok. Nothing is too much trouble for them! When it was time to leave, they presented us with gifts and stood outside and waived to us until we were out of sight. To call this a special place is an understatement. It was the best thing in all of Kyoto. It is difficult to find the first time. But don’t let that stop you from staying here – it’s all part of the adventure! Here’s the best way: From Kyoto Station, take the #206 bus to Kumano Jinga-mae. When you exit the bus, you’ll see a stoplight directly in front of you. Turn left at that intersection. You’ll pass 2 small streets on the left and a stoplight. You’ll pass the hospital on the right. At the 3rd small street, turn left. Before you get to the light at the end of the street, look for a brown house with a white sign with black lettering on the right. That’s it! It is about a 5 minute walk to the bus stop and also from the subway, but it’s easier to locate by taking the bus. さらに表示

The owner of the Ryokan was extremely friendly and welcoming: She would always make herself available to answer our questions and show us the location of the facilities (some we did not even know we had until we asked (e.g. a microwave)). The room was very homely and comfortable. There was a low-set japanese-style table with backed-chairs, comfortable thick futons, wardrobe space to hang up clothes, and tea making facilities (plus different tasty japanese snacks that were left every day on the tea tray). The only downside is there is no wi-fi. さらに表示

I stayed one night for the conference at the nearby university. 5-minute walk from Jingū-Marutamachi Station, Keihan Railway. There is no shower room in the room. There is a shared bathroom(-11PM). It would be good for people who want to stay in a traditional house of Japan. Of course, the bathroom is larger than the common house of Japan. There is no wifi for traveler. さらに表示

Despite a review here saying that Ryokan Harimaya was hard to find, somehow my friend and I didn't have the same problem. Of course, we made sure to ask for directions at a tourist information center at the JR Kyoto Station the moment we got off our train, just so we'd know which bus to take. When we got off our stop, we didn't hesitate to ask along the way for further directions. (Okay, we hesitated, but we asked anyway.) Our room was bigger than we expected, certainly large enough for two people. There were snacks, teabags and teacups on top of our kotatsu, all free (I asked, just to be sure). Our room also had a television, a full length mirror, a hair dryer and an electric water pot (for all those teabags, there are a lot). The ryokan itself is a charming mix of old and new: despite the wooden floors, an automatic door leads to another part of the house, and the toilets have a traditional and a Western one, with the Western fully equipped with a bidet and the like. The bathroom even has a weighing scale (if you'd like to check if you've been eating too much on your trip, like I did). What made our stay so memorable, though, was the staff. Despite the language barrier, we got along swimmingly with them. I can speak a bit of conversational Japanese, but they also didn't hesitate to throw out English words if they can so we can also understand what they're saying. They were helpful in every way, from lugging my obviously heavy luggage to our room, to answering all our (possibly inane) questions, and what was best was they always saw us off when we'd leave for the day and welcomed us back home when we'd come back at night. They also tidied up our already messy room without us saying so (much to our mortification as we'd made quite a mess, but as a result a missing hairbrush of mine turned up), refilling our teabags and snacks. The only downside of Ryokan Harimaya is that they do not serve meals, but there are a number of restaurants within walking distance. さらに表示

the biggest challenge is to locate the hotel. although i searched it through google map, i was lazy not noted down. therefore when i was near the hotel (70m on the left alley), searching for the hotel (since there's only japanese sign), i couldnt find it. i ask a shop owner (the gallery just 30m near the hotel) and she pointed to farther location. so it took me 50min asking 5 different japanese people and then i found the hotel (turn back to original point where i first ask the gallery owner) the room is big enough (actually quite ok) for 2 ppl. the owner provide free tea and some japanese biscuit. hairdryer inside the room. the hotel near the bus stop to travel around kyoto (note that you should go to the subway station to buy 1 day ticket, which is very helpful when you are in kyoto ) - you should read the map carefully to avoid waiting wrong bus route. さらに表示
