It traditional japaese style hotel. The stuff was very helpful please noted that they will charge u some tax fee extra (Around. 200 yen Per night) The location is great as closed to main station. The con is the main enter will close 11 Pm and open around 7 Am so if u have early flight or travel out of town till late have to consider that. The overall is great and worth for stay for this budget

Hotel staff is strict on check-in and check-out time. We arrived early via bus from Tokyo and didn't allow us to use the restroom. We just left our bags and went on for the scheduled Kyoto Tour. Overall the place was nice, close to station and the mall. Public bath is also clean.

Cons: 1. Our room was extremely dry with the heat on and I could not stop coughing because my throat got super dry. It was just an awful experience. We booked 3 nights but checked out after 1 night. My partner said that the room was dusty and could not help to sneeze at night. 2. You shared one public tiny bathroom with everybody and the hot tub is tiny too. After you shower and come out of the bathroom, it is very cold outside since there is no heat in the hallway and you need to walk back to your room. 3. The facility of this place is way too old and it may need a renovation. 4. Curfew time. You cannot stay out late or leave early in the morning. 5. No elevator 6. Coffee tastes cheap Pros: 1. Staff are all very friendly 2. Location is good さらに表示

Make sure to read all the rules before booking. This is NOT the place for a solo traveler. The doors are locked from 11pm-7am. No outside visitors either. Showers only from 7-9am or 5-10pm. There is no flexibility. The room was also uncomfortable. Shorter futons and also metal in the pillows. Had to fold my towel over top. Room walls are thin too. Must hand in your key when going out. I was extremely disappointed with this stay. The vacation I wanted didn't happen. Felt too regimented, like jail. Also, its not like another hotel is available at last minute.

Simple Ryokan, really close to the train station (3/4 mins walk). I was looking for a budget room near Kyoto train station and I found what I needed: a place to crash, cheap and conveniently located. Simple room, very simple onsen. Recommend if you like ryokans (that implies futon beds) and it’s a nice alternative to hostels

At first I was worried about need to rush back ryokan before 11pm is impossible , then I realize that this ryokan is very near Kyoto station , u only pass the Porta Dinning Basement Walk and go straight , you will reach. Beside this , I also can't used to bath in front of everyone ( same sex ) , but then I try to persuade myself to accept Japanese bathroom style and I LOVE IT ! The bathtub water is very comfort ! The staff also very helpful ! The room was big and Tatami was fine ! I saw some bad review about this ryokan , and worries about that , but that is definitely wrong . My sister and I very enjoy to stay at this Ryokan . Definitely will come back here if we visit Kyoto again !

was good, clean hotel but was told to return by 11pm or locked out till 5am. We were like huh..... Why are we penalised for your lack of staff and this was not stated when we book this ryokan. Agoda, please....

it was overall quite a pleasant stay. it felt like a great Japanese experience, staying in a ryokan, sleeping on a tatami mat, and soaking in the hot tub at the end of every day. it was conveniently located too, just a couple of minutes from the main Kyoto station. it's just important to know that the hotel doors are locked from 11pm-5am, and that the shower and bath hours are restricted to certain times in the morning and evening. also we felt one of the staff was quite rude, but the rest of the staff were very warm and hospitable.

The place was very near the Kyoto train station and had a big hot tub in the public bath to unwind after a day of walking around Kyoto. The owners and staff were very friendly except for one of the evening staff who seemed always annoyed about something and kept watching television instead of working. Overall, this is a hotel I would not mind coming back to if ever I come back to Kyoto.

We stayed 2 nights. There was one night that we wanted to stay late, but we had to go back to the hotel because they lock the entrance at 11pm every day. Our room was facing the street, so I woke up twice one night because there were some drunk people outside. Staff was very nice. I could tell that the facilities were old but were clean. Location was not bad because it was pretty close to the Kyoto station. However, I will stay Sanjyo--Sijo (Gion) area next time because that is the downtown area. It took us 25min (40min w/ waiting time) by the bus or 1500 yen by taxi to get back to the hotel from Gion street. This was my first time staying this type of ryokan (sared bathroom). The walls were pretty thin and had some noise. However, this place was cheap, so I just let it go. If your purpose is just sightseeing, business , wake-up & go to bed early, and want to save $, I will recommend this place. If you want to party or want a private bathroom, no, I do not recommend.

Plus: clean; spacious (by Japanese standards) rooms; excellent location (just 5 minutes from Kyoto Station); complimentary snacks every day Minus: very particular about ridiculously early check-out time (10 am) and late check-in time (4pm) - who needs 6 hours to clean a room??; imposes a strict 11 pm to 6 am curfew (we stayed over New Year's Eve so staying out to catch the new year countdown meant having to stay out all night - #YOLO?); curt staff (especially the main counter guy) whose conversation with you mainly consists of monosyllabic words like "KEY!" and "SHOE!"; pricey; hot water takes FOREVER to come on; place is kinda old and tired looking (and not in a ooh-it's-a-traditional-ryokan way). If you love Japan's famously fastidious adherence to rules and punctuality and their quiet efficiency, then maybe you'll love this place. For me, the negatives outweigh the positives. I've stayed in many other places in Japan where the hosts (whether hotels, hostels or Airbnb) go out of their way to be helpful and warm. So nope, I will not recommend Nihonkan unless you have a lack of other options.

As I have already all the reviews, I didn't expect much. But it was a good stay and make sure you plan all your sight seeing earlier as the ryokan will closed at 11pm. Make sure to reach the ryokan at 10:00pm if you don't want to miss your bath as the shared bath will closed at 10:30pm. Yukata is provided and had my first experience public bathing.
