Booked this without knowing what to expect and were very positively surprised, the pictures do not represent the place very well. This is a traditional and rural minshuku on the road to Sounkyo (5 min drive) and a perfect location to explore the Daisetzusan national park. Rooms are Japanese tatami style and bathroom is also shared Japanese style. Meals were delicious and the owner was very nice and made sure we were enjoying our stay, no english spoken and it did not feel like they were used to seeing a lot of foreigners. It is a guesthouse located along the highway towards the resort town of Sounkyo. It is run by a couple who also leases rooms out long term to workers who work in Sounkyo resort. It is quite a rustic sort of place. You need a car to get here and there are no clear signboards to indicate the property. We did not have a car but the owners picked us off at the JR station and dropped us off there at the end of our stay. We had help from the tourist information centre which helped to call the owners in advance. The place is clean as can be expected from Japanese guesthouses. A bit rustic as the property is not new. Not for everyone especially if you are moe fussy. Breakfast and dinner comes together with the price we paid. Both were very decent. Our gripe was that most Japanese smoke. Whether in the public area or in their rooms. The long term guests did smoke (in their rooms and in the dining area) and we could smell some smoke even in our own room. So not for everyone. さらに表示

An elderly couple host us with good dinner and breakfast. They only speak Japanese but a bit of translation app helps. Location is away from Sounkyo Onsen but it is value for money. Ideal for groups/families with own car transport. さらに表示

It's difficult to write a critical review, as this place was definitely charming, and the people so friendly. We liked the charm, the authenticity, the warmth. We liked the food, for sure, although it was a bit strange that it was cold. We did not like the smelly room (cigarette smoke), and the lack of wifi. For this last point: normally I would love to stay in places without wifi; we're now on a 7 month cycling trip however, and then you need wifi from time to time (we camp most of the time, so then don't have wifi either) to catch up, blog, plan the further trip... so it's a mixed review. さらに表示

Sounkyo is a nice place to visit but locate at a remote and rural area in Hokkaido, the choice of hotel/ hostel/ pension are limited. It is inevitable that you must have a car to go there. The owner of this pension was very nice and kind. She prepared a lot of food for us on arrival and departure. さらに表示

It was the best home stay that I have ever been. The hostess is very loving , generous and kind . She only speaks Japanese and understand a few words of English. When she learned , through our Google translator that my son left his haversack in the bus on the way there , she helped us to call and the bus company sent the bag back . We were given generous portions of break fast and dinner meals . She even asked her husband to take us the the scenic spots everyday . I will return さらに表示
