I think it’s an ok experience. Me and my husband chose a Japanese style room with lake view which is nice. Also staff are very friendly and willing to help. Although I’m not used to their pillow which makes my neck ache for about a week.. so in general it’s good but there probably better options. さらに表示

This hotel is a shark. The moment we came to the hotel, they listed out the extra charges for children. They charge high fee for all years of age, even for infant baby who is 1 year old. They call it "extra materials used", but actually they just provided the ordinary two beds on tatami. We wanted to change room as we didn't want ones at the corner, and they asked for outrageous additional fees. The only good thing is that the onsen has no people there most of the time, as there are only very few people staying at this hotel. Good luck if you pick this one! さらに表示

Our room is japanese style with a very nice lake view right in front of the balcony. The room is very huge and I enjoy their onsen, especially the outdoor onsen. This hotel is not crowded, hence you can really enjoy alone in the hotspring. Parking is free and the staffs service is superb. They will help you to do check in while you are having your welcome drink sitting at the lounge area. さらに表示

It was a surprise to find a good deal on Agoda for a place in Unzen, as I've been living in Japan and have travelled to many ryokans and Japanese places before. The staff was polite and facilities were good. Once we arrived, there was a free matcha with sweets to welcome us at the reception area, while we watched the sunset. The venue is very isolated but that's exactly what we had on mind once booking a room. Unfortunately, there was no way to access the pond so we had to appreciate the view from the hotel. We were given instructions and tried to follow all details on a 6 page guide about how to use the facilities, but no clear info about HOW TO RESERVE a meal in advance. Once we arrived at the restaurant, we've been told we should have made a reservation. At the front desk, we've been told we'd have to go outside to grab food , which was very unexpected for an onsen after we spend our money for a full experience. I'd recommend this hotel to make a clear instruction for Foreigners. さらに表示

Again, I would suggest ordering traditional Japanese style room, not the twin bed western style room if you need lake view, good room size, good WiFi, good dining experience. The twin bed may be cheaper, but that's the only good part. さらに表示

I would recommend you to book their traditional Japanese room with meals. They have a few small western style rooms with twin beds up for sale. If you are thinking about ordering the twinbed room I suggest you think again. We stayed in one of them for our first night. It's too small with a garbage/car park view. The air conditioner was not working properly so we froze and had to endure the noise from the old machine. This hotel was known for hosting the Emperor once. We joked that our twin bed was for the emperor's driver to stay because the size, feature, and view showed no intention of making us feel easy and relaxed. The Wi-Fi was not reaching the room. Anyway room was uncomfortable and should not be out on the market especially when this is a four star hotel famous for relaxation. The in-room dinner was tasty but again, such a great dinner shouldn't be served in such a small room. We asked to be transferred to a normal room the next day (All other rooms are traditional Japanese style), paid 10000 extra yen. It was way better. WAY BETTER. さらに表示

Unzen is a small village with many Ryokan, and it's amazing to walk through the streets and see steam from the jigoku ("hells") rising out of the ground all over the place, if you don't mind a slight smell of sulphur. I haven't been to Beppu so I can't compare the quality of the hot springs, but Azumaen has a wonderful facility. We were given traditional Yukata to wear around, and thoroughly enjoyed the baths, which overlook a beautiful landscape of a large pond and forest. The men's and women's baths are on different floors, and each have an outdoor and indoor section, as well as a sauna. I wish we had been able to enjoy dinner or breakfast at the Ryokan, but we were on a budget and instead opted to find our own meals. There are a couple of places to eat in the other hotels in town, as well as two stand-alone restaurants that had good food at reasonable prices. The staff at Azumaen were incredibly accommodating, picking us up in their shuttle from the nearby bus stop (we went to Unzen via Nagasaki) and showing us right to our room. I would recommend this Onsen to anyone looking for a really quiet and relaxing destination. さらに表示
