Was there in 2013... 1st its a house not a hotel. More like renting a fully furnished house. Traditional ryokan house... Needs some maintenance though... Hard to find even with gps/ you must know your way around the area... The staff speak little English thankfully my brother speaks Japanese so no problem with communication... great for experiencing traditional japanese house but suitable only if you are driving...

Wanokura was an older traditional house with paper doors and walls which had quite a lot of holes. It was a 30 minute walk from public transport in Kyoto and was very difficult to find. Our stay was pleasant but you can find better value for money

The “hotel” is very hard to find, though we were driving there. It is a traditional Japanese style house, which doors are made of paper that means no security and no privacy at all as people can easliy see through the room from the gap of the door. The owner inform ua they make a mistake jsut 2 days before my arrival and said the room was over booked but they can offer us another Moden Style Japanese Room but actually it is the living room. And there is no offical area for parking as well. Due to the location of the hotel which just above the high speed train, you can hear the sound that train pass through whole day.

We spend some very pleasant and relaxed days in this fine traditional japanese house and enjoyed the beautiful garden.

This hotel needs more responsible staff. No one was around between 3-5pm when we were told to check in. We, and others, waited and hoped someone would turn up. Hotel is next to Shinkansen train tracks so every ten minutes a train would crash by until late at night and starting before dawn. Not recommended. Far from anything thing to see or do.

We had a very nice stay at Wanokura. The experience was that of a traditional Ryokan, for a fraction of the price. The room was wonderful, clean, and had a powerful enough A/C to deal with a Japanese summer. The futon sleeping arrangements provided the best night of sleep I've had in years - excellent for the back. The bathroom is shared and though generally well-kept is clean but not the best - mostly because of the occupational hazard of shared bathrooms and the fact that it very hot in non A/C rooms. There is a kitchen, which was handy, and a set of lockers for any personal belongings. The walls are pretty thin - though we didn't really mind much, there was a lot of chatter next door until quite late! Overall though, I'd say it was a very pleasant experience, and we are very glad to have stayed at Wanokura.

Stay in this place for 1 night is ok but anymore would be too much as this place is very far from the nearest train station. There is no staff in the place and you are pretty much left to your own device. The place itself is very authentic japanese experience and could be scary if you are travelling alone.

The ryokan is right next to a major highway. This is a drawback.

I'd say this was one of the hotels that I took time to research. Other reviews said that this hotel was hard to find, far from the subway and located in the inner streets of suburban Kyoto. I made use of the google street maps to familiarize myself with the place and made sure our GPS was alive. Our host, Tomie, offered to fetch us from the JR Yamashina station but we decided to just walk and explore the area ourselves. We were also running late on our itinerary so we weren't sure when we'd get to the station. Kagyokuinn was converted to a 5-room inn. The house is renovated but kept the tatami mats, sliding doors, etc. It was clean but a bit dusty. Trash from previous guests weren't removed when we checked-in. The rooms are spacious but we had to share the bathroom. The kitchen is more than enough for heating water, getting coffee and some simple cooking. Just over the walled garden is the shinkansen track. A bit noisy but not a problem. Tomie was gracious enough to brief us about the area, places of interest, food and where to go. When we stayed, we were the only guests until about evening so there was minimal interaction with other guests. Overall, it was a great experience. I would recommend it for more mature travelers or if you're travelling with older children.
